 What are Articles?

English में Articles छोटे determiners हैं जो संज्ञा (noun) के पहले लगते हैं।
ये बताते हैं कि हम किसी general चीज़ की बात कर रहे हैं या किसी specific चीज़ की।

Definition (English):
Articles are small words used before nouns to show whether the noun is general or specific.

Hindi Explanation:
Articles ऐसे छोटे शब्द हैं जो संज्ञा (person, place, thing, idea) से पहले लगते हैं और यह बताते हैं कि हम किसी भी (general) व्यक्ति/वस्तु की बात कर रहे हैं या किसी खास (specific) की।

Simple Examples

  • A cat is sitting outside.
    → कोई भी बिल्ली – पहली बार बात हो रही है – general

  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
    → कोई भी सेब – general

  • The sun rises in the east.
    → एक ही सूरज होता है – unique & specific

 Types of Articles :

English में total 3 articles हैं: A, An, The

लेकिन इन्हें दो main प्रकारों में बाँटा जाता है:

  1. Indefinite Articles  – A, An

  2. Definite Article  – The

1 Indefinite Articles – A / An

A और An को Indefinite Articles कहा जाता है, क्योंकि ये किसी किसी भी (any) व्यक्ति या वस्तु की बात करते हैं, न कि किसी खास (particular) की।

English:
An indefinite article does not point to any particular person or thing.

Hindi:
Indefinite article किसी भी doctor, किसी भी boy, किसी भी book की बात करता है – कोई खास नहीं।

Example

  • I saw a doctor on the road.
    → कोई भी doctor – हमें नहीं पता कौन-सा doctor।

  • She bought an umbrella.
    → कोई भी umbrella – कोई specific नहीं बताया गया।

📌 Important:
Indefinite articles A / An हमेशा singular countable noun के साथ लगते हैं।
✅ a boy, a pen, an apple, an idea
❌ a milk, an honesty (uncountable या abstract sense में नहीं)

2 Definite Article – The

The को Definite Article कहा जाता है, क्योंकि यह किसी particular / specific व्यक्ति या वस्तु को point करता है।

English:
The definite article “the” points to a specific person, place, or thing.

Hindi:
"The" तब लगाते हैं जब बात किसी खास या पहले से जानी हुई चीज़ की हो।

Example

  • He saw the doctor.
    → कोई खास doctor, जिसके बारे में दोनों (speaker & listener) जानते हैं।

  • Please close the door.
    → जिस room में हम हैं, उस room का दरवाज़ा – सभी जानते हैं कौन-सा door।

Use of A and An (A और An का प्रयोग)

Rule याद रखो: spelling नहीं, sound देखो।
We choose A or An based on sound, not just on the first letter.

1 Use of A – before consonant sound

A उन शब्दों से पहले लगता है जिनका sound consonant से शुरू होता है।

Examples:

  • a boy

  • a girl

  • a bag

  • a teacher

  • a university (यहाँ sound “yu” है – consonant)

  • a European

  • a one-rupee coin (sound “wun”)

  • a useful book (sound “yu”)

2 Use of An – before vowel sound

An उन शब्दों के पहले लगता है जिनका शुरूआती sound vowel (a, e, i, o, u) जैसा हो।

Examples:

  • an apple

  • an egg

  • an orange

  • an umbrella

  • an hour (h silent → “our”)

  • an honest man (h silent)

  • an heir

अगर शुरुआत की आवाज़ “a, e, i, o, u” जैसी हो, या h silent हो, तो “an” लगाएँ।

3 Confusing Cases (exam में पूछे जाते हैं)

WordPronunciationCorrect ArticleReason (कारण)
university/yuniversity/a universitysound “yu” → consonant
European/yuropean/a European“y” sound
one/wun/a one-eyed mansound “w”
honest/onest/an honest manh silent → vowel sound
hour/our/an hourh silent

ये छोटे-छोटे points अक्सर error correction / editing में पूछे जाते हैं।

Use of The (The का प्रयोग)

अब सबसे important part – Definite Article “The”.
Board exams में अक्सर इसके अलग-अलग use पर सवाल आते हैं।

1 When Something is Already Known (पहले से ज्ञात)

जब दोनों (speaker और listener) जानते हैं कि किस चीज़ की बात हो रही है, तो the लगता है।

Examples:

  • I met the teacher you told me about.

  • She returned the book I had given her.

  • Please switch off the fan.

Hindi: जब बात उसी चीज़ की हो जो सबको पता है – वही fan, वही book, वही teacher – वहाँ “the” लगेगा।

2 Unique Things (जो दुनिया में एक ही हो)

The sun, the moon, the earth, the sky, the universe आदि के साथ हमेशा the लगता है।

  • The sun rises in the east.
